Breeding Geckos

Breeding Geckos is an art. Yeah. This needs lot of information pertaining to the breeding related features. You may have to consult an experienced breeder or the persons who own these geckos. Breeding Geckos need to be cared additionally with special attention. This enhances the success in the breeding potential of these geckos.

Never have the male and female geckos together always. It is better to keep them separately till you decide for mating actions.

Similarly, never keep two males geckos waiting for breeding in a single tank. This may lead to fighting and finally some injuries may occur leading to further problems to the persons owning the geckos.

Better to have a separate breeding tank with a floor space of about thirty six inches length and eighteen inches breadth. Yeah. This sized tank is sufficient for the group of geckos comprising one male and few females.

The geckos are able to move freely and have some running space inside this tank. Avoid overcrowding in any of the breeding tank.

Similarly, be sure of the sex of the gecko before you let them inside the tank. Any differential feature is to be understood before letting them in the tank meant for the breeding.

For example, in case of leopard geckos, the males have bulge in the ventral region of the tail region just in front of the vent and in this spot only, the penile structure of geckos called hemipenis is located.

Further, the male geckos may also have a row of pores just in front of the vent. These pores are called as femoral pores, which may not be seen in case of females. Terrarium hobbyists are generally much aware of these facts.

Many times, the juvenile geckos belonging to the male group may look similar to the female geckos.

When they are about two to three years of age, they become fit for breeding, in general. This period may vary depending on the species of geckos, nutrition level, body condition, and environmental suitability involving humidity and temperature levels inside the tank.

Avoid the breeding activity with the geckos that are found in diseased state. Hence, you need to identify the diseased ones and the healthy ones.

The healthy one is active and alert, in addition to the presence of compact body and active tail, making free movements.

Feed with one to two day old pinkies to the breeding females before allowing them to mate with males, to build the fat stores.

Similarly, through out the breeding period, you have to provide the crickets or mealworms that are dipped in calcium supplements to take care of the mineral status in the body of the breeding geckos. Yeah... Breeding geckos need special feed items like this.
