First aid to a poison swallowed dog

Before giving first aid, somehow try to confirm that the symptoms what you are seeing in the dog is only due to the poison swallowed by the dog. First aid to a poison swallowed dog is something to be given on timely basis. If not, the dog may have more sufferings due to the effects of poisons swallowed unknowingly.

Sodium carbonate
called commonly as washing soda may be given to the concerned dog that has swallowed the poison. This produces instant vomiting in most of the dogs. Some times, water mixed with excess amounts of salt may be given to induce the vomiting in dogs.

Even the mustard can be used for this purpose. This mustard may be made as a paste and may be pushed deep into the throat. However, take more care in avoiding the administration of all these first aid related agents into the lungs.

Once you suspect the symptoms of  poisoning in your dog, just immediately check up the mouth and the remnants of any poisoning like tablet or medicine or materials in the oral structures need to be removed immediately.

To the possible extent, the first aid needs to be given without making any sort of delay. If not, most of the times, the animal may succumb to the effects of such poisoning materials that are swallowed.

If there is a bleeding from the mouth, clean the mouth well with a good clothe or gauge and see that the dog has no chance of swallowing this.

When you clean well, the chances of your pet dog in getting the aspiratory pneumonia may be very less. Hence, further clinical complications due to this may well be avoided in an effective manner.

If your dog has continuous vomiting due to the swallowed poisoning materials, then keep the head lowered and hence, the chances of aspiration into the pulmonary structures get reduced.

Some times, the poisoning might have happened recently. In that case, keep the dog with head lowered in position and hence, the vomiting may get facilitated for the dog. Once the dog vomits, then the effects of the swallowed poison may get reduced to a greater extent in that dog.

Tea in concentrated form may be given a little amount, since the tannin present in the tea may help in the adsorbing of the toxic materials or metabolites in the stomach regions. Activated charcoal may be given in little amounts and these agents may reduce the effects of oral poisoning materials by forming a complex at the stomach regions.

When there is diarrhea in the concerned dog, immediately don’t overfeed the animal or stress the animal by taking the animal for a walk or a run.

Just allow the animal to have loose motion. But see that the animal does not develop signs of dehydration and take it to a veterinarian immediately, in that case.

If the mucosa becomes more intensely reddish, then more than providing first aid to the concerned dog, it is better to approach the pet animal specialist without delay for the immediate remedies like administration of intra venous fluids, antibiotics etc to the concerned dog.
