Canine senior citizens are to be taken proper care and no doubt that the aged dogs need to be given a special status in their maintenance of health. Aged homes are now a day available in many countries. Geriatric maintenance of dogs is a special feature adapted by many pet lovers recently.

Always keep the food and water in vessels that are kept in the raised position. Hence, the dog need not bend too much during the intake of water or food. Otherwise, the dog will be less comfortable.

The homes having canine senior citizens have understood that the larger sized breeds will generally live for eight to ten years. But, the smaller sized breeds of canines live for fifteen to eighteen years.

Always have the installation of a doggie door and this helps a lot to the dog because in case of aged dogs, the urination is controlled in a reduced manner.

It is to be understood that the diseases occurring in case of canine senior citizens may have more harmful effects than the case with younger dogs.

Hence, as soon as you see the symptoms of any disease or disorder, you need to take an immediate care for the dog’s condition. If not, there may be more secondary bacterial infections in those animals and the animals may succumb to disease.

Provide a thick coat for the dog in winter seasons. Hence, the canine senior citizen will not suffer from winter seasons. Take special care on the parasitism in aged dogs. Most of the times, you need to send the fecal sample to the concerned laboratory or the pet animal specialist for ruling out the evidences of parasites.

Make sure about the provision of the bed with due comforts. For example, padded bed is a better choice and the bed should always be free from dirt and should be dry, also.
The place provided for the canine senior citizen should be well ventilated but at the same time, should be rain proof.

Always have some non-slippery pathway for the aged dog. Most of the times, due to the weakened bony structures, the dog in aged conditions is highly prone for the development of fracture and hence, this has to be avoided.

Psychologically don’t get upset over the reduced movements of your dog. Like elders, the canine senior citizens also have fewer activities and hence, don’t show aversion because of this.

Always educate your children or the house assistants on how to take care of the aged dogs. Specific information like providing of due comforts to the dog etc. needs to be explained to them.

You need to understand that aged male dogs are highly prone for development of renal disorders in many countries.

Hence, special care needs to be given in this regard. You should not alter the diet schedule all of a sudden. If at all a change in diet schedule is required, you have to do it in a gradual manner. However, you may have to reduce the quantity of food slowly in case of aged dogs and this helps to avoid the obesity of the dog.
