Inflammatory Bowel Disease in Dogs
Inflammatory bowel disease in dogs is not a specific disease but this can be called as a clinical problem that is caused by irritation of stomach or irritation of the intestine. The inflammatory bowel disease in dogs is to be given importance in terms of therapy also.
If the stomach is involved, then it is the vomiting that becomes a key clinical sign in the affected dogs. This condition is termed as gastritis.
Similarly, there is diarrhea if the intestinal segment is involved and mostly it is the colon that becomes involved. Various intestinal segments are associated.
This condition is referred to as colitis. So now we have understood that the stomach or the intestine reacts to some kind of problem like food or infections.
Yeah… Some times, the spiral shaped bacterial infections may become the etiological factor for the development of this disease.
This bowel related problem may be persisting in the dogs for weeks to months, many times. However, the diagnosis shall be made by consultation with a canine practitioner. But, most of the times, the dog may be expected to be brought to the clinic and endoscopy needs to be carried out to diagnose these inflammatory bowel disease in dogs.
Often the lymphoplasmacytic gastritis or the lymphoplasmacytic colitis may be diagnosed from the biopsy tissue samples that will be obtained during the endoscopic examination of the stomach and intestinal segments.
Inflammatory bowel disease in dogs may often occur in case of middle aged to aged animals. Prednisolone drugs are given as therapy in many times in addition to change of diet or provision of diet with more fiber.
Inflammatory bowel disease in dogs associating the small bowel often reveal voluminous diarrhea. However, inflammatory bowel disease in dogs associating the large bowel causes defecation with strain, in addition to the passing of little amounts of excreta.
